Abstract

This dissertation seems to highlight the need of have a quality repair standards to develop, implement and oversee the container repairs in the Ceylon shipping corporation. The mechanism and process through which this can be achieved is examined and explained by the author in a manner which can be understood by the readers in the late chapters. It is also emphasised, in this work that the need exist for properly and highly trained personal to fulfil the required standards in container repairs. It is fairly clear that, the life of a container is depend from many factors. Some of the factors which leads to widened its life span are, 1. Better protection against corrosion 2. Introduction of Corten steel throughout 3. Better control system 4. Standardisation 5. Improved handling. 6. Comprehensive maintenance, etc. The chapter V of Conclusion provides the measures to improve the existing condition of the Ceylon Shipping Corporation’s repair system effectively relate to the new demands of the international shipping industry. Furthermore the container repair industry is today linked with the many electronic data and communication systems. The maximum advantage of these systems probably beneficial to reduction of repair cost and improving the quality standards of the containers as well. This should ensure that the Container owners and the repairer must have the compatible data collection and communication systems. Adoption of the IICL code provides the most important step towards this goal. Finally the intention of this paper is to ensure that the regular maintenance of standardisation process and will result for better service to the shippers.
