Abstract
In this paper, an attempt has been made, to give a description of the Shipping environment with emphasis on the need for optimisation; New Ships being purpose designed for a particular trade and Existing Ships to be optimised for a particular trade.
A discussion on what influences the optimal speed of a Slip, how to optimise fuel consumption and maximise profit for a given ship in a particular trade, is made.
The factors on whether it is economically viable to dry-dock a given ship, continue to operate with a rough hull or take advantage of underwater maintenance are also discussed.
In the context of economy, the advantages of passage planning, from a technical and commercial aspect are brought to light.
In the conclusions various thoughts, as a result of the work conducted, are expressed.
