Abstract
Since late 195O's “ automation” was quasi inexistent in the shipping industry. It was only in the mid 196O's that its application on board ships has become a noticeable reality. Safety was dealt with globally by the maritime community since after the disaster of the Titanic. The application of automation in the shipping industry has carried some safety related problems that have made the international community express concern. The topic” Automation and safety” intends to highlight those problems by studying the impact of the new technologies on the seafarers daily life, skills and knowledge. The technology of the equipment used playing also an important role as far as safety is concerned due to their complexity it is worth mentioning how the mariner interacts with them. Some accidents involving the automation system will be highlighted to show the evidence of the danger carried along with automation if applied without proper training, knowledge and skills. The requirements of the major rule making bodies involved in the application of automation to ensure the safety of the automated ship, the safety of the personnel and the safety of the cargo will be outlined.
