Abstract
The present paper is a study of today’s deficiencies in operational activities in tanker terminals that generally result in oil spills. The consequences arising from the spills are also analysed, with the purpose of stressing the damages they can create, and at what levels. Different data and statistics have been used to illustrate the actual incidence of operational oil spills. Although the legal side was not taken into account in this study, some cases in which operational oil spills occurred are presented to reflect the impact from a monetary point of view, which involves compensation to third parties. The study concludes giving some recommendations oriented to minimise to a large extent the high incidence of these type of spills.
