Abstract

The world changes. Nowadays, the role of Classification Societies is quite different than what has been in XIXth century when they have appeared. Consequently, the new goals, tasks and targets arised. Moreover, the new applied technologies, as well as the new materials, open a new horizont of maritime shipping. Nevertheless that this old field, but always renewed, needs a third party, an arbitrator, between producers and buyers. Thus, today, one could not accept the picture of maritime shipping bussinesses without strong consideration of Classification Societies. The world fleets are so large and so sophisticated today, that a new approach of quality, of safety and reliability, has to be assessed. Being involved in the quality of ships they classify, the Societies bring a valuable contribution to the development, on a correct basis, of international maritime fleets, as far as safety and reliability aspects are concerned. In this dissertation, an attempt has been made to evaluate the ways which could be followed by Romanian Register of Shipping in exercising its role in assuring the quality of sea-going ships classified by it.
