Abstract
The main objective o-f this study is to analyse the present system o-f passenger ship fire safety. It has also been carried out to show how fire safety was poorly affected when it was the shipowner’s responsibility. Fire safety is a system of technical and organizational measures taken to prevent fires, to contain the spread of flames, and to create safe conditions for the evacuation of people. Ensuring safety is a very complicated matter, requiring the close cooperation of specialists in many fields. In this dissertation there are six Chapters. Chapter 1, contains general information, how one can extinguish fires. It also describes the historical development of fire safety and statistics of accidents caused by fire on passenger ships. There is further information on the character, principle of fire, extinguishing methods or agents, types of fires occurring on board ship and precautions against fire. Chapter 2, contains fire detection systems with their equipment and structural fire protection. Chapter 3, highlights the equipment used to extinguish fire and extinguishing systems. Chapter 4, contains an overview of fire safety training, personal equipment used to protect firefighters, muster lists and fire drills. There is also an overview of combating fires and firefighting procedures. Chapter 5, contains an overview, requirements, inspections and surveys integrity.
