Abstract
Maritime Administration of any country has to understand and monitor the activities o-f the Classification Societies operating in its jurisdiction in order to achieve the objectives of the Administration. Responsibility and authority of Maritime Safety Administration with respect to Classification Societies are generally not well understood by many in the shipping industry, especially in the developing maritime countries. The shipping interests ought to know the roles of these cardinal organisations distinctively. In this paper, an attempt has been made to define Classification Societies valuable contribution to the maritime fields in Bangladesh and to suggest ways and means by which Classification Societies may render more assistance to the Department of Shipping (Maritime Safety Administration) for improving further the fleet safety of Bangladesh, along with the maritime history of Bangladesh.
