Abstract

Mauritius is endowed with vast Exclusive Zones by virtue of her outlying territories, and these zones are rich in living resources. These resources have not, however, been fully or even largely exploited because the Mauritian fishing industry is inadequate to the task and much of its existing equipment is both outdated and rather poor condition. Steps are already being taken to correct these deficiencies by private enterprise and by Government initiative but more needs to be done towards the modernisation of the fishing industry in general and the deep sea fleet in particular. Furthermore, the fleet should be supported by improved communications and training facilities, and the relevant legislation should be brought into line with present day conditions.
