Abstract
This paper deals with the education and training of the Nautical Officers in Bangladesh, starting from the education at the secondary school upto the certification as Master of Foreign Going vessel for unlimited tonnage. While dealing with the system of education and training of Nautical Officers in Bangladesh, a detail of pre-- sea training received at the Marine Academy, Chittagong and shipboard services/training and the various professional examination procedures to meet with the certification requirements are dealt with. The system is compared in parallel with the STCW'78 requirements to judge its compliance. In order to develop a comparable picture of the system in Bangladesh with that of developed countries, the structure of the Nautical Education and Training in some developed countries are also discussed in short. Furthermore, an insight of the situation of manpower requirement and its availability in the Maritime sector of Bangladesh has been provided. Finally based on the above studies, conclusion has been drawn.
