Abstract
The dissertation is a study of how differences in communication due to culture affect maritime safety on board vessels with multicultural crews and of how differences in cultural communication effect the multicultural maritime class. It analyzes some of the difficulties of cross cultural communications at sea and also presents questionnaire results regarding communication differences that affect the multicultural crew. Suggestions for improving cross cultural communication on board were identified. Cross cultural communication problems in the classroom are identified and discussed with approaches to deal successfully with problems identified. Recommendations are made as to ways to improve communication across cultures both on board vessels and within the maritime classroom.
