Description

A ship at sea is a complex energy system operating in an ever changing environment. In order to analyze, compare, rate and improve the energy efficiency, the performance of a whole energy system must be analyzed, considering the impact from the environmental conditions. In a wide range of different fields energy systems modeling is used for such purpose in industry and academic studies. During the last years, energy systems modeling became state of the art for energy efficiency analyzes in ship operation.

This study introduces an approach to use a generic, dynamic energy systems model to analyze ships in operation, to improve the operation along specific routes and to improve the design considering the actual operational conditions of the ship.

The concept of the generic energy systems is shown, results from performance analyses studies are presented and a novel early stage ship design and evaluation tool is introduced. Results of the study show the value of generic energy systems modeling for both, analyzing and improving ship operations and for early ship design studies.
