Abstract
It is well known that GMDSS has been implemented since 1992. In planning for a smooth introduction of GMDSS, China, which operates more than 1500 ocean-goi.ng vessels, is facing with two major tasks, namely: 1) to conduct GMDSS training of communications personnel; 2> to establish a GMDSS course for the students who will obtain a General Operator's Certificate. To fulfil these two tasks, the author introduces the current implementation of GMDSS and training of communications personnel in China, according to the 1986 amendment of SOLAS Convention, 1974 and the 1991 amendment of STCW Convention, 1976. Taking the situation of China into consideration, the author makes some proposals for GMDSS training and certification in China.
