Abstract

An investigation of Baltic herring spawning grounds using SCUBA divers was carried out in 1982 in the western central Baltic Sea. Characteristics of the 1982 spawning are described and compared with those of an earlier study in the same area as well as with existing data from other parts of the Baltic, and from the Atlantic and Pacific areas. The Baltic herring is relatively free in the choice of spawning substrata, but has a preference for plants. Soft sediment bottoms are avoided. Generally, the spawning takes place in depths less than 10 m, but deeper spawning beds have been observed.
